Community Development

Age Concern Oxfordshire is committed to the ethos and principles of a community development approach in our outreach work in and around Oxfordshire.

Our Community Development Team works with older people and with communities and groups, listening to people’s aspirations and trying to develop activities and opportunities to help them realise those aspirations.

The team supports numerous activities, including:

Local Links: volunteers keeping an eye on older people’s interests in their parishes, villages or urban communities, groups or clubs. Local Links act as go-betweens, linking older people and the full range of opportunities available in their community and beyond.

Active Age: offers a range of activities and opportunities for people over the age of 50 to stay healthy in mind and body, including:

  • exercise groups & tai chi - continually being increased throughout the county according to the needs of local communities
  • coffee and activity sessions - designed to meet the needs of individual communities, supported by Age Concern and run by volunteers and aimed at reducing loneliness and building social networks - whilst having the opportunity to learn new skills
  • arts and crafts activity classes - run in local communities offering the opportunity to learn new skills and have fun
  • community pub lunches - build upon and sustain personal contact and social networks within communities

Local Groups and communities to make representations to service providers and policymakers to initiate or improve services.
